Terms and Conditions

The terms that apply when you use KenGen Tours and when you book, or take part in, a guided visit to a KenGen facility. Please read them before you book.

Last updated 13 October 2026

01About these terms

These terms and conditions (the "Terms") govern your use of the KenGen Tours website (the "Website") and every booking for, and visit to, a power station, dam, geothermal field or other facility of Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC ("KenGen", "we", "us" or "our") arranged through it (a "Visit").

"You" means the person using the Website or making a booking, and, where you book on behalf of a school, university, company, organisation or other group (an "Institution"), also that Institution. "Visitor" means every person who attends a Visit, including you.

By using the Website, submitting a booking request or attending a Visit, you confirm that you have read, understood and accept these Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, our Cookie Policy, the general safety rules shown on the Website, and any site-specific rules and conditions shown on the page for the site you book (together, the "Rules"). If you do not accept them, please do not use the Website or make a booking.

If you book for an Institution, you confirm that you are authorised to accept these Terms on its behalf and that you will make every Visitor in your group aware of them before the Visit.

In short: tours must be booked at least 14 days and no more than 90 days ahead, for a group of at least 5, with a signed and stamped application letter. A booking is only confirmed when we email you a confirmation. Our power stations are working industrial sites: Visitors must follow every safety instruction, and we may refuse entry, change or cancel a Visit for safety, security or operational reasons.

02Who may book

  • Bookings must be made by an adult aged 18 or over with full legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement.
  • Tours are offered to organised groups, principally institutions such as schools, colleges, universities, professional bodies, companies, government agencies and community groups. The minimum group size is 5 Visitors, and each site sets its own maximum (shown on the site page).
  • Each booking must name a responsible group leader who will attend the Visit, be reachable on the phone number given, and be accountable for the group throughout the Visit.
  • Groups that include Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by enough responsible adults to supervise them at all times (we recommend at least one adult for every ten minors, and more for young children). Some sites set a minimum age, which is shown on the site page.
  • We may decline any booking, at our discretion, including where a request is incomplete, appears fraudulent or automated, duplicates another booking, or cannot be safely accommodated.

03How booking works

  1. Request. You choose a site, a date and, where offered, a time slot, and complete the booking form. Dates must be at least 14 days and no more than 90 days from the day you book, on days the site is open. Tours generally run on weekdays and do not run on public holidays.
  2. Application letter. You upload an official letter from your Institution on its letterhead, bearing its logo, an official stamp and an authorised signature. The Website runs an automated check that these elements appear on the letter. The check only helps us spot incomplete letters: every booking is reviewed by a member of KenGen staff, who makes the decision.
  3. Identification. You give a national ID number, or a passport number for foreign nationals, for the person booking. Visitors may be asked to show valid identification at the gate.
  4. Review. Submitting the form creates a booking request with the status "Pending". It is reviewed, recommended and approved by KenGen staff. A request is not a reservation, and the date is not guaranteed while the request is pending.
  5. Confirmation. A booking is only confirmed when we send you a confirmation email (which may include a visit authorisation document). If we cannot accept your request, we will tell you, usually with a reason, and you may request another date.

You are responsible for making sure that the information you give is accurate, complete and lawfully provided, and that you have told each Visitor whose details you share how we will use them, as described in our Privacy Policy. Giving false or misleading information, or a forged or altered letter, entitles us to cancel the booking and may be reported to the relevant authorities.

04Charges and third-party fees

KenGen does not charge for guided tours booked through the Website unless a charge is clearly stated on the site page or in your confirmation before the Visit. We will never ask you to pay a tour fee into a personal account, by mobile money to an individual, or through any channel other than one we confirm in writing. If anyone asks you to, please do not pay and report it to us.

Some sites lie within or are reached through areas managed by other bodies. For example, sites in the Olkaria geothermal field are reached through Hell's Gate National Park, where Kenya Wildlife Service park entry and vehicle fees apply. These fees are set and collected by those bodies, are payable directly to them under their own terms, and are not refundable by KenGen. Transport, meals, accommodation, insurance and any other costs of your Visit are your own responsibility.

05Changes and cancellations by you

  • If you need to cancel or change a Visit, please tell us as early as possible and in any event at least 48 hours before the Visit, by replying to your confirmation email or contacting us using the details below.
  • Changes of date, site or group size are requests, subject to availability and to the same review as a new booking. A significantly larger group may need a new booking.
  • If your group does not arrive within a reasonable time of the scheduled start, we may treat the Visit as cancelled so that staff can return to their duties. Repeated late cancellations or no-shows may lead us to decline future requests from the same Institution.

06Changes and cancellations by us

Our facilities generate electricity for the national grid, and their safe operation always comes first. We may postpone, shorten, change the route or content of, or cancel a Visit, at any time and even on the day, for reasons including:

  • planned or emergency maintenance, outages, or operational requirements;
  • safety, security or public-health concerns, or instructions from a government authority;
  • adverse weather, flooding, fire, seismic or geothermal activity, or road conditions;
  • industrial action, unavailability of qualified guides, or other events beyond our reasonable control;
  • a breach of these Terms or the Rules by you or your group.

Where we cancel or move a Visit for reasons other than your breach, we will try to tell you as early as we reasonably can using the contact details you gave, and to offer another date. Because tours are provided free of charge, our responsibility in these cases is limited to offering an alternative date where one is available; we are not liable for travel, accommodation, third-party fees or other costs you incur.

07Safety and conduct on site

Power stations, dams, substations and geothermal fields contain high voltages, rotating machinery, high-pressure steam, hot water and gases, deep water, steep or uneven ground and moving vehicles. To keep everyone safe, every Visitor must:

  • follow, at all times, the instructions of KenGen guides, security officers and staff;
  • attend the safety briefing and wear any personal protective equipment provided or required;
  • wear closed, flat footwear and clothing suitable for an industrial site and the weather;
  • stay with the group and within marked or designated areas, and never touch equipment, valves, switches or controls;
  • not smoke, vape or use open flames, except where expressly permitted;
  • not bring weapons, explosives, alcohol, illegal drugs or other dangerous items onto the premises, or attend under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • not fly drones or other unmanned aircraft over or near any facility;
  • only take photographs or video where the guide permits, and never of security installations or control rooms;
  • submit to security screening and searches of bags and vehicles at the gate on request;
  • respect the environment, wildlife and neighbouring communities, and leave no litter;
  • tell the guide before the Visit about any medical condition, disability, pregnancy or access need that may affect participation, so that we can make reasonable adjustments.

Some facilities are protected areas or critical national infrastructure. Unauthorised entry, interference with equipment, or recording of restricted areas may be an offence under Kenyan law. We may refuse entry to, or remove, any person who breaches these Terms or the Rules or whose conduct we reasonably consider unsafe, without any liability to that person or the group.

08Your responsibility and risk

  • Visitors take part at their own risk to the fullest extent permitted by law, having been informed of the nature of the facilities. Visitors are responsible for their own fitness to take part.
  • The group leader and Institution are responsible for supervising the group, including minors, throughout the Visit, and for the conduct of every member of the group.
  • Visitors are responsible for their own belongings. We are not liable for loss of, or damage to, personal property except where caused by our negligence.
  • We recommend that Institutions hold suitable travel, personal accident and public liability insurance for their group.
  • You and your Institution agree to compensate KenGen for any loss, damage, claim or cost (including reasonable legal costs) arising from a breach of these Terms or the Rules by you or a member of your group, or from damage your group causes to our property, except to the extent caused by our own negligence or breach.

09Our liability

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded, and nothing affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2012 or other Kenyan law.

Subject to that, and to the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, opportunity, time or enjoyment, arising from your use of the Website or a Visit;
  • we are not liable for any failure or delay caused by events beyond our reasonable control;
  • because tours are provided free of charge, our total liability in connection with any booking or Visit, other than for the matters in the first paragraph, is limited to the reasonable, direct and documented costs you incur as a result of our breach.

10Using the Website

You may use the Website only for lawful purposes and in line with these Terms. You must not:

  • make bookings you do not intend to honour, or use automated means (bots, scripts or scrapers) to make bookings or collect content;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Website, its admin portal, servers or databases, or test, probe or circumvent its security;
  • upload files containing viruses or malicious code, or content that is unlawful, defamatory, obscene or infringes anyone's rights;
  • impersonate any person or Institution, or misrepresent your affiliation with one;
  • interfere with the proper working of the Website or place an unreasonable load on it.

Misuse of the Website may be an offence under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, and we may report it to the relevant authorities. The admin portal is for authorised KenGen staff only; activity there is logged.

We aim to keep the Website available and its information accurate, but we do not guarantee that it will always be available, uninterrupted or error-free, or that site information (such as opening days, time slots or availability shown on the calendar) is complete or current. Availability is only guaranteed by a confirmation email. We may suspend, change or withdraw the Website, or any site, at any time.

The Website may link to other websites, such as KenGen's social media pages or government bodies. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or how they handle your data.

11Intellectual property

The Website and its content, including text, photographs, video, graphics, logos and the KenGen name and marks, belong to KenGen or its licensors and are protected by the Copyright Act, 2001, the Trade Marks Act and other laws. You may view and print pages for your own non-commercial use in planning a Visit. You may not otherwise copy, reproduce, modify, distribute or use them, including in publicity, without our prior written consent. Photographs Visitors take on site, where permitted, are for personal and educational use only and must not be used commercially or in a way that could compromise the security of our facilities.

12Privacy and data protection

We handle personal data in line with the Data Protection Act, 2019 and its regulations. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect when you book, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it and your rights. Our Cookie Policy explains how the Website uses cookies and similar technologies.

13General

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes in our services or the law. The version published on the Website when you submit a booking applies to that booking, unless a change is required by law or for safety, in which case we will tell you. The date at the top shows when the Terms were last updated.

Whole agreement and severability

These Terms, together with the Rules, our Privacy Policy and our Cookie Policy and your confirmation, are the whole agreement between you and us about your booking. If any provision is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the rest remain in full force. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we may still enforce it later.

Transfer

You may not transfer a booking to another person or Institution without our written consent. We may transfer our rights and obligations to another body that takes over the relevant facility or service.

Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Kenya. If a dispute arises, please contact us first so that we can try to resolve it informally. If it is not resolved within thirty (30) days, either party may refer it to mediation, and failing that to the courts of Kenya, which will have exclusive jurisdiction.
